Palm Desert Apartment Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 2 Injured Including Toddler

PALM DESERT (CBS) —  A 24-year-old man was killed Friday during a shooting at a Palm Desert apartment complex that also critically injured his 2-year-old daughter and another woman, believed to be the man's mother.

A suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting at the Hovley Gardens apartment complex at 74-501 42nd Ave., according to sheriff's Cpl. Courtney Donowho.

Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of shots fired around 11:50 a.m. at the apartment complex at 74-501 42nd Ave. and found three gunshot victims, Donowho said. The 24-year-old man was declared dead at the scene, she said.

The 2-year-old girl was flown to a hospital from nearby Palm Desert Soccer Park in critical condition, while a 43-year-old woman was taken by ambulance in serious condition.

Fernando Lozano told reporters at the scene the victims were his brother, mother and his brother's daughter.

Lozano told KESQ that his brother got into a confrontation on Thursday with the suspect, whom he described as a neighbor. He said his brother had called the police and told them the suspect scratched his truck.

The suspect got upset over that phone call.

"He was threatening my brother," Lozano said.
