Ely Struggles In Quest For Dodgers' 5th Starter Spot

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Miguel Olivo, playing his first spring training game in almost three weeks, drove in two runs with a sharp single up the middle in the first inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-0 in a game between split squads
Friday night.

Olivo, out since March 5 because of a strained groin, had the key hit in a four-run first inning for the Mariners against Dodgers starter John Ely.

Olivo is slated to be the Mariners' opening day catcher.

Matt Tuiasosopo and Josh Wilson each drove in runs in the inning.

Ely, the likely candidate to open the season as the Dodgers' fifth starter, allowed six runs on eight hits in four innings.

Seattle starter Erik Bedard allowed three hits in 5 1-3 innings. He struck out four.

Tuiasosopo added a two-run homer in the third.
