POIPU, Hawaii (AP) — Authorities say a Southern California man has drowned while vacationing in Hawaii.

Kauai police officials say the 68-year-old man was swimming near a resort hotel on Poipu Beach Tuesday afternoon when he appeared to be having difficulty getting back to shore.

Bystanders helped get the man back to the beach, but emergency crews were unable to resuscitate him. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name has not been released.
