Student In Anti-Asian Rant Will Not Be Disciplined, Will Leave UCLA

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A student who posted a web video tirade against Asian colleagues will not be disciplined because her conduct was an exercise of free speech, not hate speech.

UCLA's vice chancellor for student affairs, Janina Montero, said in a statement Friday that Alexandra Wallace's three-minute video did not violate the student code of conduct.

Montero says the video was misguided and disrespectful, but it did not seek to harm or threaten a specific person or group.

Wallace apologized for the video earlier this week in the campus newspaper. Wallace later announced plans to leave the university.

"Accordingly, for personal safety reasons, I have chosen to no longer attend classes at UCLA," she wrote in a letter to the Daily Bruin.

In the video, Wallace complained about Asian students talking on their phones too loudly in the library. Although she took down the rant shortly after posting it Sunday, it had already gone viral on the Internet.
