Firefighters Visit Classrooms To Spark A Love Of Reading

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — County firefighters will be visiting classrooms throughout Los Angeles County for the next couple of weeks starting Tuesday in an effort to foster a love of reading.

The visits -- part of the national "Read Across America" program -- are sponsored by the California Teachers Association with the theme, "Serve Up a Good Book!"

A special birthday salute to Dr. Seuss will be included in Wednesday's events, Captain Sam Padilla of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

The firefighters will "respond to classrooms of local school children across the region to ignite their love of reading," Padilla said. "Sparks will fly when they (firefighters) walk in and read to students."

More than 20 events have been scheduled and more may be added over the next two weeks,  Padilla said.
