STUDIO CITY (CBS) —A cold winter storm with a chance for snow in lower elevations is approaching Southern California.

The system will bring rain as early as Friday afternoon to the LA area, then linger into Saturday. Once the low pressure system moves overhead, which will be mid-day Saturday, the snow level will drop from 4,000′ to possibly 1,000′. Areas in the Santa Clarita and San Fernando vallies, the foothills of the San Gabriels and the Santa Monica Mountains could potentially get snow.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the weekend.

Temperatures on Thursday will continue to be below average with a mix of clouds and sunshine.

Coastal – low 60s

Basin – low 60s

Valleys – low 60s

Deserts – upper 50s

Mountains – mid to upper 30s
