Transient On Bicycle Fatally Struck In Fountain Valley

FOUNTAIN VALLEY (CBS) — A 50-year-old man on a bike was struck and killed Wednesday night in Fountain Valley.

The fatal crash happened near the intersection of Brookhurst Street and Niagara River Avenue about 6:30 p.m., Fountain Valley police Lt. Jim McNeff said.

A woman from La Habra Heights was driving north on Brookhurst Street in a Volkswagen Beetle when the bicyclist crossed Brookhurst Street from Niagara River Avenue, McNeff said.

The bicyclist, who police believe was a transient, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, McNeff said.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, McNeff said.

Witnesses said the bicyclist was wearing dark clothes and his black bicycle did not have lights or reflectors.

This article is another painful example of the prevailing anti-cycling bias in the media and law enforcement, implying the deceased was automatically at fault because of the color of his clothes and his unilluminated bike. Certainly those things may have made the cyclist less visible, but there’s more to this tragedy that what’s been shown.

Nowhere does the article examine who had the right of way or how fast the motorist was traveling. Because what’s more important is that the police “believe” he was a transient — as if that preliminary assumption has got anything to do with the accident.
