Catholic Priest Removed From San Dimas Church

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A Catholic priest who admitted having a sexual relationship with a high school girl more than 40 years ago was removed his position, and a high-ranking official who oversaw the background checks of priests resigned.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles announced Friday that the Rev. Martin P. O’Loghlen, who worked at Holy Name of Mary Church in San Dimas, was removed from any priestly activities.

The archdiocese said it was reacting to inquiries from a New York Times reporter researching an article about O’Loghlen.

The 74-year-old priest is accused of having a long-term sexual relationship with the teenage girl beginning in 1960, and seeking her forgiveness later, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Cardinal Roger M. Mahony separately accepted the resignation of the Archdiocesan Vicar for Clergy, Msgr. Michael Meyers. Archdiocese spokesman Tod Tamberg told the Times that Meyers had been in charge of procedures intended to ensure that no sexual predators remained in ministry positions. He had held that position since 2009.

The archdiocese said it had not received any complaints about O’Loghlen during the two years he had been assigned to the San Dimas church.

In Friday’s announcement, church officials said they did not fully consult records that revealed O’Loghlen’s past admission of sexual misconduct.

In 2007, the LA archdiocese agreed to pay $660 million to 508 people who accused priests of sexual abuse. The payout was the largest settlement in a scandal that involved an estimated 5,000 priests nationwide and cost the Roman Catholic Church more than $2 billion to resolve cases in the US.

    so, what else is new?

    • John Freel

The only difference is that everyone is interested in bad Priests. Rabbis and Ministers have HIGHER rates of sexual improprieties based on National Council of Churches research. So, lose that log in your own eyes, hypocrites. Do u think the NEW YORK Times researches all religions equally ? Spare me.

      • Jason Robards

Big diff is that the other groups arent as organized and are selected by individual parishes not by an central hierarchy who conceals stuff

      • Amy

The difference is that the diocese KNOWS what these priests are doing, refuses to remove them for decades, and thus endangers their own followers. If you’re a teacher and you abuse a student you get suspended, fired and arrested. If you’re a minister you get kicked out, arrested and blacklisted. If you’re a catholic priest, it’s swept under the rug and you get to keep working with children and teenagers! An article in the NY Times pointed out that even AFTER they knew about this priest’s misconduct, they allowed him to serve on a sexual abuse advisory board.

      • Dan Centurioni

Everyone was hiding abuse in the 50’s and 60’s, churches, schools, scouts, families, etc. It was not something to be spoken about and it was always swept under the rug. Unfortunate, but true.

The National Council of Churches isn’t exactly an unbiased source, John.

  • E. Fairbanks

Why not shine as bright a light on the thousands and thousands and thousands of people he has help in the past 40 plus years. He is a good, holy man and should not be a sacrificial lamb for the Archdiocese.

    • JR

Fr. Martin is a pious man. Who of us is sinless? He is repentant and has helped many people and served God for many years of his life. Do you think living the life of a priest is easy, I imagine not. They are human. What happened to forgiveness – isn’t that what following Jesus is about? Thank you Fr. for the years of service.

CLOSE all churches, they are unnnecessary, nothing but pedophiles and weird looking gays AKA priest.

  • Doorlord

Lou, you are a pud. Not all priests are bad. This one was not gay or even a pedophile. He was doing a 17 year old girl. Mahoney ne.eds to resign w/o his retirement, he knew Martin’s history

I totally agree with E. Fairbanks. The media looks forward to report negative information about the Catholic Church every opportunity it gets. When’s the last time you heard the media reporting on a rabbi or a minister in a similar situation? What Martin did forty years ago is undoubtedly wrong. The victim has forgiven him and Martin has taken the proper steps to receive the help he needs. Absent this incident in his record as a priest, the good he has done in the past forty years and the number of people who now live a more fruitful life because of his service to the priesthood cannot be measured. He is a man who is guilty of a serious lapse of judgment and all parties involved have moved forward towards healing. Martin and others in similar situations do not need our judgment but our prayers.

If you think this was his only transgression you are sadly mistaken.I know of at least one other young woman he was involved with.He also betrayed a close friend -seducing his wife while counseling them on marriage difficulties.
      He admitted this to me.
Justice has come far too late.

I thought religion was about forgiveness and redemption,We all trip and fall sometime in our lives,Christ said “He who is without sin,let him throw the first stone”.This Man sevrved all his life, yes he did trip and fall, but it is how he got up and tried to do the right thing, that should count for something.

  • Judy

I agree with Lee and Joe. It was a long time ago, and was concentual. The man is not a pedifile. As long as he has not done anything else since, then he should be able to go on. There are more “priests” out there that have not learned from their mistakes and continue that have not been caught. Martin should be reinstated.

  • George

I know him to be a decent and compassionate man. He was what, 24 years old, when this happened? I, certainly, am in no position to condemn him for this and I doubt if many others are either.

  • yzzy

I agree with most of the comments above. I also think that it is about time for priest to be allowed to marry. Most religions allow marriage among the clergy, why not the catholics ? I’m not saying it’s a cure-all but it might cut down on the sexual abuse. I think the Pope should allow the priest to marry, but then that’s my opinion and I’m stuck with it.

  • Rudy K.

Why not leave well enough alone. It happened 40 years ago and it was concentual.
We all make mistakes…whatever happened to forgiveness?

  • JUDY

A seventeen year old girl and a twenty four year old man had an affair. He should have not lost his job 40 years later for this stupid mistake. He semed to me to be an honest and dedicated man of God.

  • Lori Ebiner

Father O’Loghlen is a wonderful Priest. He is also human – this was a concentual relationship between two young people a long- long time ago. We are losing a positively wonderful priest for a very very stupid reason.

  • MD

Weather it was 40 yrs ago or last week, it was wrong.
At the age of 16 a young girl was harmed by a man who was supposed to be a spiritual leader. I am sure we are all tired of hearing about these trangressions, but that does not mean they get a free pass. It is about time he paid for his failings.

  • S

Those of you who seem to think it’s okay… I hope the next place they hide him at is with your daughters!

  • Idontjudge neithershouldyou

Guess what people….. Concentual is a willing and ready participant. A 16 yr old knows what she is doing – period. He was 23 yrs old and he’s a man, a human being and no perfect. They had a “relationship” a Concentual one at that! OK, he’s a Priest and took an oath, but look at the reality…. How many people cheat, have affairs and yet took vows? How many of you lost your virginity in HIgh School? It no different than having a relationship with a 17, 18 yrs old. OK, she was 16, but I’m sure she knew exactly what she was doing. Spare me! Now if he molested a helpless child – thats another story! BTW: I knew teachers that had concentual sexual relationships with their High School students when I was in High School myself….. The teachers were cuties and I didn’t blame them. Its is right? Maybe not, but its human nature at that age. Teenage Hormones…..they can be your worst enemy.

  • MD

If you did not read the entire story then you need to..the girl was 16 and he was 29 and her debate coach. He came to the house where she was baby sitting and she thought it was to coach her..
if you all would let your 16 yr old girl date a 29 yr old (and a PRIEST) then you are right to not condemn him….I am glad you did not raise my kids!

Very sad to hear about Fr. Martin, he is one of the well respected priest here. This sad news brought tears to his closest parishioners. He did asked forgiveness and tried to find closure on thier relationship long before on letters stated. The victim didn’t appreciate what “forgiveness is “that the Priest asked from her and proof of letters from Fr. martin says clearly sorry for he caused pain & hurts he did to her . For more than 1 year of this secret relationship, I don’t think the victim didn’t know what she’s doing and has no motives what her feelings was on thier relationship, At 16 age has matured mind to think what is good for her and to the priest she’s involved with. Letting this thing “stacked” for 50 years? For what reason why only at this time she make this move? Hope the victim is happy & contended on her decision, I respect & understand why she did. Fr. Martin is well respected servant of God at our Parish, he inspired many people lives. The issues brought today doesn’t affect my respect & admiration to him and on what’s happening on our church, my Faith is on God. He did confessed his sinful act long before to GOD, no one is pure. He still a priest forever, nothing can change. May the Peace & healing be with them.

I am so glad this SOB has finally been caught. This was NOT a one time affair. He was having affairs with 2 women I know during the years of 1972-1975. Under the premise that these were special relationships because he was a priest. Each of the women felt that they were the only one ever in his life. All of you would be very surprised if you were to resource students who went to Bishop Amat during his years there and hear the stories about him with former students . These two women were of age but the fact is, he crossed the line as a priest and used his vocation as a tool to prey on women. I wish there was more punishment for him besides being just kicked out. He is not a loss at all to the church. .

    To Fr. Martin:
    The Lord bless you, and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine on you,
    And be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,
    And give you peace.

Thank you for your years of service. The Parish will miss you. We knew you were forgiven a long time ago.
