Between 50 and 60 people in the area of Leimert Park, near Crenshaw High School, were evacuated shortly after the small blast at 4 a.m. Tuesday.
Police say the force of the blast knocked the officer down and he struck his head.
Capt. Melissa Zak says the firecrackers in the console looked like rock cocaine.
Evacuees were taken to a pair of buses to sit until evacuation orders were lifted.
