UC Expands Individualized Review Of Applications

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The University of California is expanding use of a new approach to undergraduate admissions that evaluates students' academic performance in the context of their background and life experiences.

The UC Board of Regents on Thursday approved a resolution calling on all undergraduate campuses to use "individualized holistic review" of college applications.

The full board's approval follows a committee's endorsement Wednesday.

UC officials say the Berkeley, Irvine and Los Angles campuses have already started using holistic review, which requires reviewers to consider the academic opportunities available to each applicant.

Backers say the method will make the UC admissions process fairer, but some regents worry it will make it more subjective.
