LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Need to get to San Diego fast? That’ll cost just $577, please.

A survey by the San Diego Union-Tribune found that a one-way ticket for a 40-minute flight from LAX to San Diego’s Lindbergh Field costs a minimum of $577.

By comparison, a flight to London can be bought for as little as $316.

One airline told the newspaper that most of the passengers flying on the route are connecting at LAX to another city and do not pay the full fare.

As for cheaper ways to get between the two cities, the Amtrak Surfliner charges $31 for service between the two Union Stations, and the LAX Fly-Away bus connects with nonstop service to LAX for $7.

But if people really want to fly to San Diego, the cheapest option is a $107 ticket with a changeover in Phoenix.

A good reason to just drive.

I want to know more about the $316 fare to London, I cannot find it for less than $508 when searching Expedia.com and Kayak.com.

You can charter a private plane cheaper than that and you will leave without being molested by TSA officials.

I would rather drive down to Diego County. It doesn’t take long (less than two hours). Compare that to getting to the airport, checking in, waiting etc. then after landing down there get to the bus or rent a car. Too much hassle.

This should not come as a surprise to many, how much money does one think it costs to operate this flight? You are flying a jet airplane, with two engines, only 30-50 seats, in low altitude, with a full crew, landing fees. ground handling costs etc. The primary use of these short routes is to feed passengers into a hub to connect to other destinations, when passengers do this then the cost is spread out becuase it helps airlines generate more traffic. If you really want to fly from SAN to LAX, try Carlsbad, its smaller and cheaper.

The $300 ticket to LHR most likely doesn’t include taxes of $200 or more!

$497 to Heathrow from LAX with taxes. Air New Zealand.

Amtrak is the best. Comfy seating, get to enjoy the coastline, all transportation offers at the SAN train station. Best way to go, cheaper than driving.

  8. Customer Service says:

I read the article to find out WHY it’s so expensive. I got more information from the comments section than I did from the actual article! Thank you!

  9. Steve2 says:

What a pointless article. Maybe CBS Radio can write another about the cost to fly from LAX to BUR.

There are pluses to riding AMTRAk, as long as they don’t DERAIL, or hit a car in the crosstracks!

  11. Susie says:

Except for the San Onofre nuclear plants, the two-and-one-half hour drive is quite pleasant. If you’re traveling alone, there’s the radio. If you’re driving with companions, what a great opportunity to talk and learn more about one another.
