Man Arrested In 2003 Sex Attack At Redondo Union High School

REDONDO BEACH (AP) — Investigators say cold case detectives used DNA evidence to track down a suspect in the 2003 sex attack of a Redondo Beach high school student in a campus bathroom.

Lt. Joe Hoffman says 45-year-old Sylvester Gene Rawls was arrested Monday at his Long Beach home. He was booked on a sexual assault warrant and is in jail with bail set at $250,000.

The Torrance Daily Breeze says the 17-year-old girl was attacked on Aug. 28, 2003 at Redondo Union High School when she went to use a girls bathroom in the school gymnasium. Rawls was apparently hiding in a bathroom stall.

Rawls faces arraignment on Wednesday.
