DA: Arnold’s Political Ties Cut Jail Time For Nunez

Prosecutor in case says she was never consulted

SACRAMENTO (AP) — San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis says she’s shocked by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s decision to reduce the manslaughter sentence of the son of a political ally just hours before he left office.

Dumanis said Monday that Schwarzenegger’s decision diminishes the sense of justice for the victim and inflicts new trauma on the victim’s family. She says her office — which prosecuted the case — was never consulted.

Late Sunday, Schwarzenegger reduced the sentence of Esteban Nunez from 16 years to seven years for his role in the stabbing death of Luis Santos in 2008. Less than a three months ago, a judge agreed with prosecutors that the sentence should not be reduced.

Esteban Nunez is the son of former California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez.

Can we bring Luis back to live nine more years of his life? Didn’t think so. Why does this guy get a break??? Lets remember that this kid wanted to be a gangster, so he should be treated like one.

  3. Julian Redford says:

Schwarzenegger betrayed the Republicans and moderates who put him into office and got him reelected by embracing many destructive, liberal polices. It’s no surprise to me that he then betrayed the citizens of California by giving a murderer a break.

Everyone knows that there’s political corruption and favoring, but when it slaps you in the face like this story does, it quite shocking. How sad for our state.

  5. Marilyn says:

What would Arnold have done if his son had been the victim. This is politics at its worst. What a travesty of justice.

Even he leaves office, that doesnt work out.

Not only was Fabian Nunez a fellow political crony or hack,
He also works for Arnold’s PR Firm
    That’s a conflict of interest,
and should not have been allowed

Arnold should be stripped of his fake citizenship and deported

  11. Not newsworthy says:

Arnold is a crony fake and a liar just like the rest of those career politician in Sacramento. It’s all about protecting their own friends and suporters and not about justice or being a fair person anymore. $$$ is all that matters.

  12. GC1008 says:

This is so sick. I’m sure the victim’s families feel totally betrayed. Cutting a sentence because it was his first time when the first time was MURDER is not excusable. This was a political favor. How would the Governor fhave elt if it was his son who had been murdered and for the stupid reason that someone hadn’t let the killers into a party. There has to be someway of stopping this from really happening.
