PASADENA (CBS) — Overnight campers along the Rose Parade route are only allowed to start fires inside small barbecues, no matter how cold it gets, a fire official warned Thursday.

Temperatures near freezing are expected overnight, but campers trying to stay warm must use small, professionally manufactured barbecues that are elevated at least one foot off the ground, said Pasadena fire spokeswoman Lisa Derderian.

Firefighters will be patrolling the route to make sure no one starts a bonfire on the ground or places a grill within 25 feet of any building, Derderian said.

The fire code requires that campers monitor their barbecues at all times and have a fire extinguisher handy.
