Couric: America Needs Muslim ‘Cosby Show’

Anchor reflects on 'bigotry' in yearly recap

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Are TV audiences ready for a new kind of “American Dad”? Katie Couric thinks so.

In her webcast review of the top trends of 2010, the CBS Evening News anchor suggested a possible solution to what she termed the “seething hatred” facing Muslims in America: a prime-time situation comedy.

Couric, joined by Politico’s Jonathan Martin, comedian Mo Rocca and Sheryl Huggins-Salomon of theroot.com, mused that the controversy surrounding the proposed mosque near the World Trade Center site in New York City might be quelled by “careful analysis and evaluation” of why a majority of Americans remain opposed to the mosque.

When Rocca stated his failure to name “five things about Islam,” Couric replied, “Maybe we need a Muslim version of The Cosby Show.”

“I know that sounds crazy, I know that sounds crazy,” she continued. “But The Cosby Show did so much to change attitudes about African-Americans in this country, and I think sometimes people are afraid of what they don’t understand.”

Couric has previously spoken out against the controversy over the mosque at Ground Zero, saying earlier this year, “There is a debate to be had about the sensitivity of building this center so close to Ground Zero. But we can not let fear and rage tear down the towers of our core American values.”

Oh, Katie – do please get over yourself! Do you really believe people take you that seriously? I doubt it; I know I don’t.

Yup, I used to respect her, but now she is right up there with that cow Oprah. If she (well, both of them) were to retire I would not miss them.

There already is such a show–a Canadian sitcom called “Little Mosque on the Prairie”. It’s about a Muslim congregation in a small town in Sasketchawan, Canada.

The series is a Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) production. The show is now in its 4th season and is aired in Canada in English and French. It is also aired in several other countries (Israel, Israeli Occuppied Territories, United Arab Emirates, Finland and Turkey).

In 2008, U.S. broadcaster FOX bought the rights to make an adaption for the U.S. market that would put the show in an American setting. Fox has not yet produced any episodes.

Me thinks Ms.Couric has gotten to big for her britches. Must be reading her own networks media info about her. Diane Sawyer she will never be. Katie, you want a muslim show to watch on TV, got a hint for you, move to a Muslim controlled country.

Ms. K. Couric in all due respect, I disaree with you. Has it simply slipped your vivid memory that 9/11 happened and what about Fort Hood and what about the multitude of attacks prior to 9/11 and after that, are you not getting the message?
Muslims want to destroy society’s who have freedom! Are you in on the conspiracy to destry America? I say that because to suggest any kind Muslim/Islamic entertainment is an oxymoronic to say the least. Do they need to kill those close to you for you to understand and what about those who are already victims of Islamic terrorists?
I just think the political correctness the media and American leadership is demonstrating on a continual basis is insenitive and malicious to the citizens of America and a major sign of weakness to our demonstrated enemies.
