My family and I decided to help out one Thanksgiving Day years ago. We were absolutely sad to see that as much as there were real needy families there were and incredible amount of families simply out there for a freebie. I am trilingual and
speak Spanish. I could hear lots of things that got me upset for example: A lady asking her daughter if she was sure she turned down the temperature of the oven for the turkey while they were t the Mission. I remember looking at her and in Spanish telling her this event is for people who have no turkey or a lace to live.
Meanwhile what really made us decide to leave and never do this again is when we were at the parking lot and saw so many getting in nor out of cars and converted vans. Some simply going back and forth filling them with all the blankets and other things being given. We felt like fools, suckers as usual. I have then chosen my charities very carefully. I choose my families one on one.
Would be nice if channel 2 could have their undercover cameras there and check this out.

@ Marie: Well you can’t overgeneralize, only because there are some people who take advantage doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t help those that are in a real need. Plus that lady that told her daughter to turn down the oven did she tell her to turn it down for the turkey? Maybe all they had were potatoes, you can’t expect people to live off or have a happy thanksgiving off potatoes alone. You never know, don’t be so quick to judge. Also, why is a charity giving out turkeys only to people who have no place to live, if they have no place to live then how the heck are they going to cook the turkey? Also you said that many people were going back and forth with more blankets, who is to say that there aren’t 10 people living under one roof and they can’t afford to turn on the heater. It’s cold around thanksgiving. All I am saying is don’t punish the one’s who really need it for those who you say made you feel like a sucker. What goes around comes around if people take advantage then most of the time these peoples real punishment is that they always live in poverty and end up dying in poverty. If you are going to do something good do it don’t complain.
