VAN NUYS (CBS) — A transient was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Van Nuys Saturday and police sought the public’s help locating the suspect.

The fatal collision occurred around 5:40 a.m. at Victory and Van Nuys boulevards, Officer Gregory Baek of the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Transient Struck, Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver in Van Nuys, KNX 1070’s Bill Cooper reports.

Baek said the victim, identified as a woman in her 60s, was walking in the crosswalk on Van Nuys Boulevard when a vehicle, possibly a white Ford Explorer, hit her.

“The cart she was pushing was dragged for several hundred feet before it separated from the suspect’s vehicle,” Baek said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle immediately fled the area, Baek said, adding that an off-duty police officer used his personal vehicle to block traffic next to the victim so she would not be run over again.

Investigators believe rain and wet pavement may have been a factor in the crash.

“The roads were slick and it’s possible the motorist could not have stopped in time,” said Los Angeles police Sgt. David Mascarenas of the Valley Traffic Division.

There was no description of the driver.

Police urged anyone with information regarding this collision to contact Valley Traffic Division detectives at (818) 644-8036 or (818) 644-8020.

People slow down especially after it rains. How many times do I have to hear of these incidents before motorists finally get a grip on this truth. Find the hit and run driver and make him/her serve some time in prison at least 5yrs worth of time for killing another human being.

Toey, The prison time isnt enough to scare anyone or to change the way they drive…..The killer gets 5yrs for killing yet the family member (S) gets a life time sentence? No Justice in that….

Trying to make sense of this….Ok, so she must have been in the cross walk?? The driver ran a red light??? More info please!!! And they blame the rain again for this? The way I’m seeing it, is, the driver, going too fast on wet slick roads, ran a red light, and hit the girl…For god sake…STOP blaming the rain!!!

What is WRONG with people these days … the fact that the drivers LEAVE the SCENE is even more horrific than the terrible accident itself. YES, it would be terrible to accidentally hit a pedestrian (of course, more so for the pedestrian I understand) … but these people that just take off and leave a human being in the road to suffer and/or die – THOSE PEOPLE MUST BE SENT TO PRISON FOR LEAVING THE SCENE. PERIOD. If I hit an animal, I would not just drive away! JESUS CHRIST.

If you can’t stop you were going too fast
and dud not allow fir weather conditions

Who wants to be that the driver didn’t have auto insurance, or a valid DL?
