3 Critically Injured In 9-Car Pileup In Irvine

IRVINE (AP) — Four people were injured, three critically, and a dog was killed in a traffic collision that involved at least nine vehicles including a jackknifed big rig on an Orange County freeway.

The California Highway Patrol says the pileup occurred just after 8:30 a.m. Saturday in wet weather on the northbound 405 Freeway in Irvine.

Capt. Greg McKeown of the Orange County Fire Authority says a woman and a girl were trapped and had to be cut out of one vehicle. They are hospitalized in critical condition. A dog died in the same vehicle.

McKeown tells the Orange County Register than a man was partially thrown from another vehicle.

All five northbound lanes were closed for about a half hour.

Officers at the crash site said there were large amounts of oil and gas left on the roadway.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
