LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Jerry Brown's campaign has apologized to Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman for using "salty language" while talking about her.

An aide to Brown called Whitman "a whore" while he was talking to Brown on a phone call they thought had been disconnected.

A spokesperson for Whitman's campaign calls the incident an appalling and unforgiveable smear.

Brown and his aide were suggesting Whitman would make deals with special interest groups.
