Police Fatally Shoot Man At Watts Housing Project
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles police officers have killed a man they say pointed a gun at them in a Watts housing project.
Police spokesman Gregory Baek says officers patrolling near the Imperial Courts at about 5 p.m. Thursday encountered a group of possible gang members. Baek says one man pointed a gun at officers as he started to run away and at least one officer opened fire.
A Los Angeles County coroner's investigator tells City News Service that the man was pronounced dead at a hospital. His name wasn't released.
Police declared a tactical alert in the area when a crowd gathered after the shooting and some people shouted angrily at officers. Dozens of officers were sent. The alert was canceled about 1 1/2 hours later.
