SoCal Ports To Consider More Cuts In Pollution

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Officials from the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles are considering whether to adopt a plan that aims to aggressively reduce harmful pollutants from ships and trains.

If approved in a joint meeting of the ports' harbor commissions Wednesday, the environmental plan would require ships coming into the nation's busiest port complex to burn low-sulfur fuels and run on electricity when docked. It also calls for cleaner-burning locomotives at the ports' rail yards.

The plan aims to cut sulfur dioxide emissions by 93 percent from 2005 levels by 2014. It also aims to lower nitrogen oxide emissions by 22 percent and diesel particulate matter by 72 percent in the same time frame.
