Police Identify Fatally Shot Carjacking Suspect

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Police Wednesday identified the man they fatally shot after a failed carjacking in the Westlake district yesterday.

The carjacking suspect was identified as 25-year-old Jack Schlesinger.

Schlesinger’s hometown was not immediately available.

Officers saw a car near Union Avenue and Temple Street about 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday and ran a check on it and discovered it had been taken in a carjacking . They deemed that the driver was possibly armed and dangerous, said Officer April Harding of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section.

The car pulled into an alley where it could go no further, Harding said.

Schlesinger then got out and began shooting at officers with an AK-47.

Officers returned fire and Schlesinger died.

No officers were injured, Harding said.

Was the carjacking IN Westlake then it ended up in the area of Union and Temple?

Because the area of Union & Temple IS NOT Westlake. That intersection is is in Echo Park.

So the actual use of deadly force and criminal act of pulling such a weapon was IN Echo Park.

I’m pointing this out as people may assume that such criminality is something limited within the Westlake area. And you know how gentrified parts of Echo Park are, certainly don’t want to affect any property values or give the new Echo Park a bad rep.

This was my cousin, he was a great person. Like many of us he went down the wrong road at a young age and yes had plenty of chances to turn his life around and didn’t. He was a great and loving person who would do anything for his family. We will love him forever and miss him always. He is one of gods angels now. The LAPD did what they were supposed to do in this situation and the family understands that as well. We love and miss you Jack. Xoxoxo
