99 Cents Only Stores Fined For Selling Illegal Pesticides

COMMERCE (AP) — A federal judge has ordered 99 Cents Only Stores Inc. to pay more than $400,000 in penalties for selling illegal pesticides in various household products.

The decision announced Wednesday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cited 166 violations that dealt with pesticides, which were unregistered with the federal agency and also misbranded.

A phone message left for 99 Cents Stores, which has headquarters in Commerce, Calif., was not immediately returned Wednesday.

The fine is the largest contested penalty ever ordered by an EPA administrative law judge against a product retailer under a federal pesticide act.

Some of the products were sold in California, Arizona and Nevada. The violations were found by state inspectors between 2004 and 2008.

The people who buy in this store need these pesticides for what lives in their apartments. A lot of cockroaches, ants, flies, spiders, and who knows what else, oh ya this is where the bed bugs come from, so let them have it . As it kills the bugs off, it can kill them off to, kill two birds with one stone.

I guess that you are as stupid as you sound. People from all races and financial status shop there.

Absolutely crappy reporting!! You should be ashamed of this. Which chemicals? Are they Insecticides, fungicides, herbicides? Quantities? What is the federal guideline? What regulation were they alleged to have not followed? This is solely meant to cause alarm to the people who are uneducated on these things (which is 99% of the population at large and 100% of the government morons).

I remember a few months ago Target and WalMart got hit with a huge fine for selling among other things windshield wiper fluid that was not environmentally friendly to California’s standards. They got into hot water on a separate issue of uneducated employees not using common sense and dumping chemical cleaners down the drain illegally.

Randy, I live in a nice home in Stevenson Ranch. I make a good living, I am highly educated. We have a huge ant population in the area because of where the gomes were built. Some of the best areas in Los Angeles have bed bugs. It is a national problem even at 5 star hotels. So where is your line of thinking going? Sorry, but you are so out of line. I shop at The Dollar Store and the 99 cents store for some basic items because they are cheaper then most other stores. I also don’t have to wait for sales like I do at the other stores. Time for you to check it at the door guy.
