Man Charged In LA Protest Of Fatal Shooting
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles city attorney's office has charged a man with assaulting officers during a protest over the fatal police shooting of a Guatemalan immigrant who allegedly threatened two women and an officer with a knife.
The city attorney's office said Monday that Daniel Cortez pleaded not guilty on Friday to two counts of assault on a police officer and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. If convicted, the 24-year-old faces up to four years in jail.
Cortez is alleged to have used a sling-type device to fling projectiles at two police officers on Wednesday during a protest in the Westlake area that followed the Sept. 5 shooting of Manuel Jaminez.
Police say Jaminez lunged at a bicycle officer who responded to reports of a knife-wielding man.
One woman, however, has claimed she saw from across the street that Jaminez was unarmed.
