Engaging people's minds through storytelling can be a challenging feat for some. Learning to find your voice and being clear and concise can be done with the right teacher and the right class. Whether you plan to write a thesis, a report or even write a screenplay, here you can explore some of the best writing classes in the Southern California region.

Membership for this writers group is free for those that are interested in joining the monthly in-person critique group. Members are encouraged to donate to the organization in order to keep the meetups happening on a monthly basis. Joining the O.C. Writers group will give you access to many features including their Facebook group page, involvement in the member directory, social events and writing classes. The writers group offers write-ins (which are held at various locations around Orange County and scheduled via the group's meetup.com site), critique groups, specialty workshops and more. Participants are encouraged to bring some work to share so that feedback can be given during the sessions.

Established in 1962, this relatively young university offers continued education for adults with its extension program, which includes writing programs. Many classes are offered online for the convenience of working professionals and for those seeking to improve their skills. The writing programs and classes offered at UCI Extension vary every quarter.

Acclaimed novelist Richard Bausch has joined forces with Chapman University in the launch of a creative writing workshop that is now in its third year. Taught by Bausch and open to members of the community, the free writing workshop is open to anyone and everyone to join. Participants spend 14 weeks with the famed writer, where he helps you grow your voice. Past participant Joshua Prichard mentioned that, "When sitting in a room with Richard, you often forget that you are in the presence of one of America's most accomplished and award winning storytellers. His humility and kindness win out, and he makes you feel as if you are a colleague and not a student.

With a goal of bringing the joy back to writing and reading, the Bridges Reading & Writing Institute works with students from the pre-k level to 12th grade to make this educational activity not only useful, but fun too. By using the current trends and contemporary methods, the institute is able to develop a student's desire to enjoy reading and writing. Set for two hours in a welcoming and comfortable setting, the creative writing sessions encourage students to take part in a variety of pieces such as fantasy fiction stories, mysteries, autobiographies, reflective essays and much more.

Master the art of structure, plot and characterization for the story you wish to tell. If you have an idea that is the next big sitcom or hollywood film, join the OC Screenwriters Association and take the steps to bring that idea to life with a screenwriting class. Offered at the Irvine Valley College, screenwriting classes are taught by Mark Sevi, a professional writer that has sold 25 scripts and produced 19 movies. Sevi has taught here for more than 13 years, teaching the introductory and intermediate courses in screenwriting. Classes run every eight to 10 weeks.
