Best Weekend Activities For Seniors In OC

Orange County is a hubbub of great activities geared toward seniors 65 plus. For those on-the-go, there is plenty to do seaside, history buffs can spend a quiet weekend day roaming historical sites and movie fans can retreat indoors to catch up on flicks for free. Check out the five best weekend activities for seniors who are on their own or with friends and family in the OC.

Showtime! is part of the Orange County Public Library in-house movie series offered to the public at no cost. The films are shown on the third Sunday of each month, located in the Community Room. An easy event for single seniors to get to and attend, Showtime! movies are often family-oriented, fairly recent and feature award nominees and winners such as "5 Flights Up" (2015) starring Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman and the drama thriller "’71" (2014). The library also hosts author talks, educational presentations and entertainment. Get an OC Public Libraries card by visiting their page, which gives users access to checking out materials from any of the 33 branches.

Dana Point Harbor is a perfect way to spend a Saturday or Sunday. From the Saturday Dana Point Farmers Market (located in La Plaza Park on Pacific Coast Highway near the clock tower) to viewing the beautiful yachts and boats throughout the marina, Dana Point Harbor is great for active seniors. Spend the day fishing or whale watching, taking a quiet walk by the marina, and a lunch/dinner at Jon’s Fishmarket for freshly caught seafood or Wind & Sea for surf and turf. Upcoming events include Tall Ships Festival at the Ocean Institute, a BBQ cook-off championship and, of course, the much-anticipated holiday boat rides with Santa Claus.

Visit the birthplace of former President Richard Nixon at his named museum and library in Yorba Linda. Families of all generations will enjoy the museum learning about the presidential history, the turbulent 60s and the space program during the time of President and First Lady Pat Nixon. Some of the greater interests (especially kids) include the opportunity to walk on the presidential helicopter, as well as the beautiful and lush gardens which were designed by the First Lady. Museum entry is $8.50 for seniors.

Arden: The Helena Modjeska Historic House And Gardens

Named as a National Historic Landmark and through the preservation efforts of Orange County Parks & Recreation, Arden: The Helena Modjeska Historic House and Gardens offers a walking tour Wednesdays through Saturdays by advance reservation only. Madame Helena Modjeska, known as a Shakespearan actress, emigrated from Poland to America in 1876. She made her home on the Santiago Creek in Modjeska Canyon. Docent led tours give visitors a glimpse of Madame Modjeska’s life. The grounds, which she called the Forest of Arden, feature native California plant life, live oak and redwoods groves, English yews and white lilacs, the Madame’s vintage home, magical rock lined walkways and a fresh breath of local history. The tour is $5 per person and takes 1 ½ hours.

The Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club honors the leisure "bowling on the green" game, which during the Roman Empire was the game known as "bocce." Welcome to all ages from the beginner bowler to the advanced and competitive, Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club offers affordable membership, free lessons and instruction, games, a sense of community and a place to socialize. The Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling features one of the largest lawn bowling clubs, a members' clubhouse and beautiful greens. During the weekend the club organizes a "Social Bowl" that members often bring light fare to for snacking.
