Although this Claremont venue is 33 miles from downtown Los Angeles, the Candlelight is worth the drive for traditional dinner theater at its best. This season, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice's highly-touted (and very first) musical theater collaboration takes on Joseph and the story of his coat of many colors. Talk about a story of Biblical proportions, all seen in the same place where such high-end munchies as grilled tri-tip and marinated chicken breast are served by staffers decked out in tuxedos.. Youngsters along for the cultural experience will also enjoy their own menu that includes standards like macaroni and cheese and a bunch of chicken nuggets. Yum!

High powered strobes, pyrotechnics and other 21st century ambience enhancers herald the ancient arts of falconry, jousting and horsemanship. All this excitement explodes in an arena where those there to be enthralled by all the action are served a four-course meal fit for kings and queens, princes and princesses. Meals include vegetarian stew made with three different bean types, and bar service means your pick of a mean cocktail that can be ordered and then delivered whenever you so desire, be that before, during or after the show commences. By the way, falcons are part of the entertainment, so get ready to duck your heads at any time since this particular bird likes to check out all potential prey during the official proceedings.

If you like to hear your short fiction read by an expert, stop by The Federal Bar and head upstairs to listen to the latest of The New Short Fiction Series. This time, the longest running spoken word series takes on "Horsepower" and other stories by Kurt Taylor as read by artist Sally Shore, Matthew Thomas Lange, Judd Hollander and Robert Standley. Meanwhile, vittles couldn't be better as the kitchen serves everything from pork belly braised in root beer to chicken rolled into lettuce wraps. Draught beers like the pre-prohibition lager Craftsman 1901 are also on tap, while wines by the glass are plentiful.

This Los Feliz-based venue, though extremely intimate, feels like a Hollywood version of a veteran Broadway hangout with its goth atmosphere created by over-the-top chandeliers that sparkle against otherwise dim lighting. That said, what better place to enjoy vintage show tunes made invincible on the Great White Way? Brad Ellis of "Glee" fame leads his singing troupe in a show that will make you pine for a night in the legitimate theater. Indeed, Ellis gives you a taste of the classics that were made great in New York City but endured so that the rest of the world could embrace these well-rehearsed tunes over and over again. Dinner is served prior to the extravaganza, as are crafted cocktails that were said to be inspired by Norman Rockwell. To be true to this particular outing, why not try the Bacardi-based Jazz It Up, a drink that includes Ancho Reyes Chili liquor as well as mango, agave and lime juice?

If you're looking to take part in arguably the Southland's best murder mystery event, head for Matteo's and plan to stay a while (unless you get killed, that is). This theatrical offering unfolds over four hours' time as a host of unexpected situations draw you into the story that seems totally plausible, especially after you've enjoyed a cocktail or three. So, if homocide intrigues and laughing is your best medicine, take in Keith & Margo's Murder Mystery Dinner where you will tuck into some simple grub, taking time out should something suddenly happen that needs your undivided attention and may be criminal in nature. Hey, you never know, right?
