This time of year many restaurants add pumpkin dishes to their menu celebrating the advent of Halloween and Thanksgiving. Most of these dishes are desserts made with pumpkin such as pies, cookies, cakes and even ice cream squares. But there are a few restaurants that add pumpkin to many of their main recepies and even to some of their ales. Rutabegorz Restaurant opened in 1970 serving only dessert and coffee, with an emphasis on health-conscious eating. There are presently three locations, the original in Fullerton, another at 264 N. Glassel St. in Orange, and the other at 158 W. Main St. in Tustin. It places an emphasis on serving fresh, natural foods including vegetables and fruits, along with chicken, turkey, albacore tuna and lean deli meats. One of the specials is the pumpkin hummus served with tortilla chips and veggie sticks, priced at $3.75 as part of a full meal’s order. Another of the specialties is the Buffalo Bill’s pumpkin ale for $2.

The cafe, which is located in the camp and entertainment center, is in its sixth year in Costa Mesa, offering fine dining paired with the right wines in a casual atmosphere. The chef, Mark McDonald, is also the owner and his breakfast, lunch and dinner menus reflect the use of seasonal ingredients. One of these is the pumpkin pecan French toast, freshly baked and garnished with whipped cream on the breakfast menu at a cost of $13.50. Seating is first-come, first-served as no reservations are taken.

This Vietnamese restaurant is highly rated for vegetarians and vegans. It regularly carries a pumpkin and curry dish on the menu, which includes tofu and vegetables and is priced around $7.95. This is the perfect, cozy place to kick back with a good meal and a cup of coffee. It is located close to Disneyland and the convention center. Parking is available on a private lot.

Both locations offer an extensive menu starting with appetizers in which the sweet potato fries are enhanced by the pumpkin sauce, at a price of only $4.45, and can be added with something from the extensive and reasonable menu to round out the meal. The restaurant recently added 13 new flat-panel televisions with all of the sports channels. With 28 beers on tap, it has become the place for sports fans.

This restaurant, which serves both lunch and dinner, features an extensive menu that includes everything from oysters to pizza in a range of dining or lounge options. Have appetizers and wine, enjoy the full dining experience, or relax in the lounge with a custom-made beer such as the pumpkin ale. It is medium amber ale made with fresh pumpkins and spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and allspice.
