You don't have to be a maven to enjoy lox, cream cheese and bagels. However, knowing where to eat the best smoked fish is another story. Local restaurants and delis bring lox to center stage in ways the foodies and non-foodies will appreciate. Many of these establishments cure the fish on site, while others "import" from New York City. Check out these iconic places in L.A. to indulge in the salty smoked delicacy.

Wolfgang Puck created the original love affair between smoked salmon and pizza. A signature dish for this award-winning Austrian chef to the Academy Awards Governor's Ball and restauranteur, the Spago pizza is cooked inside the kitchen's wood-burning oven. Topped with house-cured smoked salmon, the pizza is made with a dill crème fraiche, as well. Offered on Spago's bar bites happy hour, lunch and reverse happy hour (9 p.m. to 11 p.m.) menus, the pizza is an excellent choice. Spago Beverly Hills continues to be at the top of the list for California-style cuisine.

Head up to the 5th floor dining room at Barneys New York department store in Beverly Hills for a taste of the East Coast. The breakfast menu is perfect before a day of shopping in the iconic store and chic neighborhood of Los Angeles. Barney Greengrass receives daily shipments (via air) from New York to serve its patrons the best smoked fish and bagels. Choose from a mild and silky Nova Scotia salmon, a Belly Lox cured in salt brine, baked Kipper salmon, a pastrami salmon flavored with garlic, paprika, molasses and pepper, or Gravalox, a cured dill, peppercorn and vodka smoked salmon. All fish can be prepared as an appetizer, on a bagel or cooked with scrambled eggs. Whitefish, codfish, caviar and pickled herring are also offered on the extensive fish menu.
