Best Hipster Hangout Spots In Los Angeles

Despite the rise in this trend, hipsters are nothing new. The term has been around since the 1940s and referred to the group of dissatisfied youth who were part of the jazz and poetry scene that eventually gave birth the civil rights and women's rights movements decades later. By the 60s, the term had faded out of use, but recently, hipsters have re-entered the pop-culture lexicon. Since 1999, the term has experienced a revival and even renaissance. Below are a few of our favorite hipster hangs that we aren't so over, already.

Los Angeles, CA 90039

Housed in a former Latino tranny bar, Cha Cha Lounge is a tribute to all things fun and unique about LA, especially our people. The entire venue is furnished by and features the work of all local artists. There is no cover and no dress code, as Cha Cha fully embraces a "come as you are" philosophy, even if that means you walk in wearing a Batman costume on a Monday at 5 p.m. While hipsters tend to be known for their fickle and trend-avoiding tastes, Cha Cha has never fallen from their graces since opening its doors in 2005.

Los Globos' Them Thursdays! Nights feature the best mix of LA's eclectic music scene. The historic live music venue and bar has been at the core of the live music scene in Los Angeles for 38 years, but moved into the local hipster epicenter when the club started staying open 7 days a week. The drinks here are legendary for both their taste and their organic fare. The best part of any club, though, are the regulars who fill the room, and the regulars at Los Globos make up some of the most interesting characters you'll ever come across in LA.

The former "Coffee Pot" coffee shop is under new ownership and rocks a new look in the same heart of Hipster Paradise location, Silver Lake. The staff is uniquely friendly and are aces in All Things Coffee. The new owner, Erin West, traces her coffee slinging proprietor pedigree all the way back to 1990s Seattle and can be found on-site every day of the week. The kitschy and comfy décor sets the perfect vibe for any hipster hang-time. Meanwhile, the cafe food and coffee is made to taste and won't empty your wallet. Forget Intelligentsia, the Hedgehog is Silver Lake's new hipster coffee haven.

All Star Lanes may seem pretty far off the typical hipster's beaten path out in Eagle Rock, but a hipster hot-spot it is nonetheless. To say the place has everything is an understatement. The bowling alley features air-hockey, billards, and a really long tank shoot-em-up game. There is also a restaurant on-site with pizza, American, Mexican and Chinese food, as well as DJs and karaoke. The location also houses an intimate and comfortable cocktail lounge with cheap, strong drinks and 8 TVs. When it comes time to hang with your scenester friends, you couldn't find a more real place to chill.

Handsome Coffee Roasters
582 Mateo St.
Los Angeles, CA 90013
(323) 606-3593

This downtown art district coffee and roasting bar is for those who talk about their coffee the way some people treat their vino – like it's an actual person, instead of just an adult beverage. Handsome was opened last year by three lads who are enthusiastic about their coffee, one of whom is a former World Barista Champion. The coffee is straightforward and  serious (read: not Starbucks: no sugar, no non-dairy what have you, no frappe-anything) for the serious aficionado only. The spacious venue features owners and baristas with panache, and an ironic stuffed Justin Beaver as a kind-of, not-really mascot. Handsome Coffee Roasters is downtown's go-to Hipster Mecca.
