Summer is a great time to try something new. For residents of Orange County, you're in luck as the area offers a plethora of workshops, classes and lessons for adults to develop a new skill or advance in a special hobby. Adults are invited to get their feet wet in beautiful Newport Beach, get their hands dirty with a mound of clay in an artist's studio, play chef in the kitchen, reduce stress using Tai Chi and think fast on their feet in an improvisation workshop. These are the five best classes for adults in Orange County.

The guys at Newport Beach Surfing Lessons will make your summer worthwhile. The Surfing Lessons school takes adults (private or group lessons offered) into the Pacific Ocean comfortably and safely with the goal of getting them up on that board and enjoying the beautiful coastline. Specializing in teaching beginners, the surf school is owned by instructor and former surf champ Sean Louden, who employs a knowledgeable, trained and trustworthy team of instructors. The business also offers equipment rentals including surfboards and wetsuits. Lessons are two-hours.

Muddy's Studio is a ceramic studio where beginner students are invited to learn the basics of creating ceramic pieces from start to finish. Founded to provide a space for a community of artists, potters, and sculptors, Muddy's Studio offers classes that include basic skills instruction, experiment with clay and the wheel, and the firing and glazing process. The studio features 12 Pacifica wheels, handcrafted worktables, wheel tables and a wedging table, and a large assortment of tools. Advanced classes and work space are also available.

For some, spending time in the kitchen can be quite the disaster. Adults interested in trying their hand at whisking, sauteeing, boiling and chopping should check out Eat Street. This local cooking school takes the pressure out of the kitchen and injects fun into prepping and creating a homecooked meal. Overseen by owner and Chef Katie Averill, Eat Street's menu of classes changes monthly to accommodate seasonal ingredients, tastes and various cooking techniques. Eat Street also offers date night classes including Oo La La!, which is a three course French bistro menu with a chocolate soufflé finale.

The practice of Tai Chi is for everyone, regardless of age or physical limitations. OC Tai Chi Studio designs classes for adults that teach postures, body coordination, meditation and relaxation through the traditional Yang style principles and disciples in China. Students attest to lower blood pressure, stress reduction, increased flexibility and improved blood circulation. There are three central locations where OC Tai Chi Studio teaches - Irvine Deerfield Park Community Center, Irvine Harvard Athletic Park and Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley. Beginning classes are available during the week day, evenings and weekends. For all first timers, the first class is free!

Whether you are someone who has a knack for thinking fast on your feet or looking to boost your confidence, South Coast Repertory may be the right place to park yourself this summer. Open to "kids" ages 18 to 80 years old, the Improvisation Class is open for summer session on Tuesday nights 7pm to 10pm from June 16 to August 4, 2015. South Coast Repertory's fast-paced improv workshop is designed to work on acting, characterization, creativity and spontaneity, all while having fun. Taught by writer and show creator Greg Atkins, the class utilizes improv scene building and theater games. The school also offers adult acting and playwriting classes and advanced scene study.
