2 Hospitalized After Driver Speeds Through Crowd In Yorba Linda

YORBA LINDA (CBSLA) -- A vehicle struck at least two people in Yorba Linda on Saturday during a Black Lives Matter protest and counter-protest, marking the second incident in three days involving vehicles careening through protesting crowds in the Southland.

The BLM march was going along Imperial Highway with the counter-protesters holding pro-President Donald Trump signs on the other side, and about 200 officers were monitoring the demonstrations.

At one point, counter-protesters crossed the six-lane highway and confronted the BLM group, which is when things took a violent turn.

Just before 3 p.m., a white sedan was caught on camera crashing through the crowd, hitting and injuring at least two people, according to the sheriff's department.

"A male adult suffered two broken legs and one female adult suffered moderate injuries," said Orange County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Dennis Breckner.

After the crash, some attendees chased the car and officials surrounded it before the driver, identified as 40-year-old Tatiana Turner of Long Beach, was detained.

Other arrests were also made at the demonstration, sheriff's officials said.

Turner was charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon and was booked into Orange County Jail.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department identified Turner as a member of the "Caravan for Justice" event.

The crowd dispersed shortly after an unlawful assembly was declared in the Yorba Linda area due to the clashing groups.

This demonstration follows several days of nationwide following an announcement from Kentucky's Attorney General that no officers will be directly charged with the killing of Breonna Taylor.

In Hollywood on Saturday, dozens of people gathered for a "Justice for Breonna" demonstration.  Participants marched down Highland Avenue to the LAPD Hollywood precinct.

This incident involving a car driving into protesters is the second incident of this kind in the Southland over the past three days.

On Thursday, a vehicle also drove through a group of people gathered in Hollywood to protest the outcome of the Taylor case, striking two people as well.

Angelique Jackson said she suffered a fractured skull after the incident on Sunset Boulevard and called it "horrific" looking at the video of her being thrown to the ground by the vehicle.

"It looks like I shouldn't be alive. It's kind of shocking that I'm as fine as I am," Jackson said. "Of course, I put myself in that position. I knew the risk I was taking, however, he hit me."

Citizen journalist Vishal Singh, whose foot was run over while trying to help Jackson, rejects claims that the driver feared for his life.

"That wasn't someone trying to escape," he said. "That was someone who avoided side streets, where they could have gone around us and drove directly in to harm people."

Both incidents of vehicles striking protesters remain under investigation.
