Hammer-Wielding Suspect Killed During Deputy-Involved Shooting In Laguna Niguel

LAGUNA NIGUEL (CBSLA) — A man armed with a hammer was killed during a deputy-involved shooting in Laguna Niguel Monday afternoon.

Orange County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a disturbance between a man and a woman around 12:30 p.m. on Coral Sea at The Seaside at Laguna Heights apartment complex.

"Deputies arrived here at about 12:30 for a disturbance call between a male and female," said Lt. Matt McDaniel.

According to the caller, the suspect, described as a man in his thirties, was armed with a hammer. A shattered sliding glass door could be seen from the street.

Upon their arrival, a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

Witnesses said they heard deputies yell at the man to put the hammer down.

"Shortly after they arrived, they encountered a male subject who is believed to have been armed with a hammer. That's when the officer-involved shooting took place," McDaniel said.

Witnesses reported hearing between three and five shots fired.

According to McDaniel Orange County Fire Authority rendered aid to the suspect, but he succumbed to his wounds.

No deputies were injured in the shooting.
