Car Flies Off 6-Story Parking Garage In Santa Monica, Lands Across The Street

SANTA MONICA (CBSLA) — A sport utility vehicle in Santa Monica flew off a six-story parking garage, landing on a building across the street.

The crash happened just after midnight Sunday on 2nd Street, causing injuries to the 20-year-old driver of the SUV, who was taken to a hospital where he was being kept in sedation. He was conscious, suffering minor injuries, and speaking with officers when they arrived and is expected to survive.

The crash caused damage to the parking structure as well as a McDonald's across the street. No other individuals were injured, however.

Officers said that the man drove his vehicle off the top level of parking structure 8 located at 1571 2nd Street. The cause of the crash is not yet known and it remains unclear why the driver lost control and drove past a railing. Due to the fact the driver was transported to the hospital and receiving medical treatment, they were unable to determine if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the incident.

The garage at Santa Monica Place remains closed, with security in place.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact detectives at (310) 458-8941 or the Watch Commander at (310) 458-8491.
