Winners/Nominees For The 73rd Annual Tony Awards
NEW YORK (CBSLA) -- The 73rd annual Tony Awards were held Sunday evening at Radio City Music Hall in New York and broadcast live on CBS.
James Corden was the host. It was the second time Corden -- of "Late Late Show"fame -- has hosted the awards.
The show aired in LA on CBS2 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m PT (ending time approximate.)
It was a big night for the musical "Hadestown" which won eight Tonys including Best Musical. Bryan Cranston won for the drama "Network."
Elaine May won her first award at age 87 for playing the grandmother suffering with Alzheimer's in "The Wavery Gallery." She made her Broadway debut in 1960.
Ali Stroker, who won best actress in a featured role in a musical for Oklahoma, is the first-ever actor in a wheelchair to win a Tony Her speech was an emotional highlight of the night.
"This award is for every kid who is watching tonight who has a disability, who has a limitation or a challenge, who has been waiting to see themselves represented in this arena," she said. "You are."
Stephanie J. Block won for playing the adult Cher in "The Cher Show." She might have gotten off the best line of the evening, when she told her husband, "If you ever leave me, I'm going with you."
But the political note of the night was won by Cranston who plays the fictional, ranting Howard Beale in "Network." He thanked real journalists for doing the hard work of bringing truth to the masses.
"The media is not the enemy of the people," he said, "demagoguery is the enemy of the people," in a not so veiled reference to President Trump.
