School Officer Injured In Officer-Involved Shooting In Westlake District

WESTLAKE (CBSLA) — A Los Angeles School Police Department officer was injured, but not shot, in an off-campus officer-involved shooting in the area of Third and Alvarado streets in the Westlake district Friday afternoon.

The officer, a 27-year veteran of the force, was taken to a hospital where he is recovering and is doing well, according to detectives.

A suspect in a stolen car tried to run that officer over.

It ended with multiple people hurt and a string of damaged, disabled cars across at least three blocks.

Alvarado was closed between Valley and Third as police investigated multiple crime scenes.

It started around 2:40 p.m. when police say a woman stole a van. She was reportedly driving erratically, crashing into cars and eventually crashing onto the sidewalk near Burlington and Bonnie Brae at Third Street.

She then abandoned the stolen van and carjacked another car. She was only able to get a block away to Third and Union streets where she crashed into more cars and was confronted the first time by the school police officer.

At some point the confrontation traveled to Third and Alvarado where police say the officer did fire shots as the suspect attempted to run the police officer over.

Witnesses say three other people were taken to the hospital -- at least two from cars and one possibly a pedestrian.

"We know that the suspect in question was involved in multiple traffic collisions. Hit-and-run investigations across the city involving Olympic and Rampart divisions," said LAPD Capt. Al Lopez. "We know that the suspect became involved in a carjacking incident where she exchanged into another vehicle. During the commission of that, she proceeded and became involved in a road rage incident which ultimately led into the officer-involved shooting."
