RANCHO MIRAGE (CBSLA) — Legendary and beloved Broadway star Carol Channing has died, her publicist Harlan Boll confirmed Tuesday. She was 97.

Channing got her big break on Broadway as Lorelei Lee in the 1949 original production of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.”

But she was best known for her role as Dolly Levi in “Hello Dolly!”, delighting audiences in over 5,000 performances as Dolly Gallagher Levi. Channing won a Tony Award for the role in 1964.

Channing died at her home in Rancho Mirage after suffering strokes over the past year. No events have been scheduled, as was her wish, according to Boll.
