Man Allegedly Threatens Passersby With Knife, Barricades Himself In House

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — A nearly six-hour standoff in the Westlake district ended late Tuesday after police fired tear gas into a home, forcing out a man who had been armed with a knife.

Police were called to the 500 block of Burlington Street just before 6 p.m. Tuesday to investigate reports of a suspect in his 40s or 50s chasing and threatening passersby with a knife, Los Angeles police Sgt. Ricardo Acosta said. When officers knocked on the door of the bungalow, the suspect refused to come out.

A SWAT team was called in, and the home's closest neighbors were evacuated, while others sheltered in place.

At about 11:20 p.m., SWAT officers fired 10 rounds of tear gas into the home. The suspect came out "a little confrontational," requiring some "force at the end," Acosta said.

The suspect, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries he suffered in the scuffled with officers, Acosta said.

Evacuated neighbors were allowed to return home.
