2 Dead After Car Rolls Over Into Hyde Park Structure, Causing Partial Building Collapse

HYDE PARK (CBSLA) — Two people have died Sunday after a car crashed into a structure in the Hyde Park area.

Following the crash, authorities say the Mercury sedan rolled over into the building in the 3000 block of W. 66th Place. It has caused a partial building collapse.

The two individuals were reported to be dead on the scene.

Police say the car was speeding down the 6600 block of South Crenshaw Boulevard just after 9 Sunday morning.

It apparently lost control after hitting a fire hydrant and light pole. Then, slid about 60 feet and took out two metal beams that held up an awning before it collapsed.

"It flipped on its side. It landed right under that building and both the driver and passenger ejected," said Augustine Orozco, LAPD South Traffic Division.

Police say the passenger was a woman and the driver was a man and that they were not wearing seat belts.

Police say people tend to speed there.

Police say they haven't been able to find any witnesses to the crash so they aren't sure why the driver was speeding.
