TORRANCE (CBSLA) — A maintenance issue resulted in an unplanned flaring event at the Torrance Refining Company Saturday evening, according to the Torrance Fire Dept.

Fire officials and Torrance police were on scene at 3700 W. 190th St. shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday.

The flaring was visible throughout the City of Torrance and lasted approximately 10 minutes, a spokesperson for Torrance Fire confirmed.

The flaring event was the result of a valve malfunctioning.

No off-site impact was reported.

I saw it from up on a hill where I live. This is about 30 miles from the refinery. It was an amazing aight to see.

  2. I saw the smoke while going for a hike in Malibu. Posted some pictures on my twitter account.

  3. The flares lasted at least 25 minutes, possibly longer, not 10 minutes as the City of Torrance originally reported, printed here. A few people received city alerts announcing a “10 minute” flare when they could still see the flare going! Many people who had signed up to receive alerts never even got one.
