Robber Holding Up Fast-Food Restaurant Shot By Someone At Drive-Thru Window

SANTA ANA (CBSLA) — An armed man who tried to rob an Orange County fast food restaurant early Saturday morning is recovering after he was the one that ended up being the one shot.

Police said the attempted robbery happened around 12:45 a.m. Saturday morning inside the Cozy Corner Drive-In on the 400 block of Harbor Boulevard in Santa Ana.

Security video shows a man in a large, black jacket and face covering enter the establishment and throw a bag at a restaurant worker. He holds up his hand in his jacket pocket as if holding a gun.

As the visibly frightened employee puts money in the bag, the man and the woman worker suddenly duck. A cup on a counter can be seen exploding as a result of being hit with a bullet.

Police said the bullets came from a customer at the drive-thru window.

"Three bullets," cook Daniel Acevedo told CBS2 News. "Maybe the guy in the car wanted to help."

In surveillance video of the shop's exterior, a gray, four-door sedan can be seen fleeing the scene as the rear passenger-side door closes.

Police responded and found the robbery suspect had been shot twice in the upper body. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. He had surgery and was in stable condition Saturday evening, police said.

The man's female companion was also taken into custody.

Police said the man had a revolver and believe he might have been involved in other robberies in the area.
