Malibu Home In Danger Of Sliding Downhill

MALIBU (CBSLA) — A Malibu mudslide is occurring at the base of a three-story home.

Part of a backyard fence has already crumbled, with the sliding terrain reaching the rear of the home in the 2800 block of Hume Road, although the house itself has not yet slid.

There do not appear to be any homes below the slide.

LA County Fire says they found lots of water when they inspected the 20-by-40-foot area and now they're investigating whether this was caused by rainwater or a faulty sprinkler

"We found no other areas that have been affected so far," said Randall Wright, LAFD. "And with no other homes below it that's good news. That there are no other homes in line of that house."

They say the risk of the home sliding is very small but building and safety inspectors red-tagged it, meaning no one can go in or out.

They say the homeowners were out of town and are now on the way back.

"Any time, with the rains we've seen. What's been going on in Montecito. This is something we take very seriously," said Wright.

There is a deputy monitoring the situation and making sure no one gets too close. In the meantime the water has been shut off just in case this was all caused by a faulty sprinkler.
