Deaf Man Attacked In Robbery Spree: Police

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A son is recounting his deaf father's survival after he was attacked during a robbery spree.

Hector Reyna was the victim of a violent attack outside an El Pollo Loco Wednesday in Santa Ana.

The suspect, police say, is a violent felon who was just released from jail.

Investigators say Stephen Edwards, 28, demanded money and was armed with a knife.

Ray Reyna says his dad was walking out of the fast-food chain when he was attacked.

"I'm shocked. Shocked. I'm just glad my dad is OK," Reyna said. "He told him he was deaf and didn't understand what he was saying."

Santa Ana Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said Edwards has a "long criminal history."

"This individual ... who we last arrested on the fifth of this month for a probation violation, spent one day in jail,"  Bertagna said.

Police say Edwards also attacked a female code enforcement officer while she was inside a city truck. She tried to intervene.

Edwards is also accused of attacking a responding officer with a lead pipe, breaking his arm, and head-butting another officer.
