Barstow Man Accused Of Fatally Striking Man With His Car -- On Purpose

BARSTOW (CBSLA.com) — Authorities said a Barstow man is behind bars after purposely striking another man with his vehicle and killing him.

Officials said that they responded to the 25000 block of West Main Street just before 10 p.m. Tuesday after reports of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian.

CHP officers determined the collision was not an accident but a purposeful act.

The pedestrian was identified as Larry Tortes, 35, a resident of Barstow.

Sheriff's deputies with the Barstow Station were dispatched to lead the investigation.

The victim was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. The man died around 3:10 Friday morning. The investigation was turned over to homicide detectives.

Officials determined the suspect identified as 50-year-old Abelerado Reyes Jaramillo of Barstow and victim Tortes had an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation just before the suspect allegedly ran the victim down.

It was unclear if the victim and suspect knew each other prior to the confrontation and altercation.

The Specialized Enforcement Detail located Jaramillo Friday into custody without incident.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Homicide Detail, Detective Jonathan Woods at (909) 387-3589.
