LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A Los Angeles lawmaker leading the fight to make California a so-called “sanctuary state” has suggested half of his family would be deported for using falsified Social Security cards and other fake identification.

California Senate Leader Kevin de Leon made the claims during testimony before the Senate’s Public Safety Committee for SB54, a bill introduced by De Leon that would create a statewide sanctuary for immigrants living in the country illegally.

Responding to President Trump’s suggestion of “withholding federal funding” from California, de Leon said: “Half of my family would be eligible for deportation under the executive order, because they got a false social security card, they got a false identification, they got a false driver’s license prior to us passing AB 60, they got a false green card, and anyone who has family members who are undocumented knows that almost entirely everybody has secured some sort of false identification.”

“That’s what you need to survive, to work,” he added. “They are eligible for massive deportation.”

Some reacted to the senator’s statement by calling for authorities to further investigate de Leon’s claims.

In a statement released Monday, de Leon did not reference his comments to the Public Safety Committee, instead opting to criticize Trump’s reaction to SB54.

“President Trump’s threat to weaponize federal funding is not only unconstitutional but emblematic of the cruelty he seeks to impose on our most vulnerable communities. Taking such irresponsible action would hurt our senior citizens, children, farmers, and veterans – these are not political games, these are real lives the President is targeting”, said de Leon.

  1. O Sorry but the people hurt by the immigration laws enforcement are not “our” people – they are another country’s people and they assume we should be thrilled to take care of them. That’s insane sorry.

  2. sounds like aiding and abetting to me – looks like he should be impeached or resign – looks like his membership to the bar should be challenged.

  3. I call that a HUGE conflict of interest! He isn’t representing the best interest of the country because of his personal loyalties!

  4. Sounds like this is where to start looking for voter fraud.

  5. This article misquotes him, which you can tell by watching the video. He says “…because IF they got a false social security card, IF they got a false identification, IF they got a false driver’s license prior to us passing AB 60, IF they got a false green card…”

    1. and IF the video was still available, I could watch it – BUT it does not change the premise of DeLeon’s ridiculous rant (or your defense of it):

IF an immigrant committed the crime of forgery to violate our immigration laws, THEN that immigrant should either be thrown in jail or deported out of the country.

So Senator de Leon is saying being illegal is ok, breaking the law and having false ID’s is ok – so what is this teaching the nation, the children? That it is ok to lie and cheat. That Senators do not have a problem with it as well

  7. He should start saying his goodbyes now. These people broke the law coming here illegally and then broke additional laws by using fake ID’s. He say’s illegals are hard working. Maybe..but rather than spending money in USA they end up sending most of it to Mexico. There is absolutely no benefit to us having these people here.

  8. Robyn Moore says:

How can you be a law abiding , hard working resident if A) you are here illegally B) you are committing fraud and identity theft by using FAKE ID and FAKE SS numbers?

  9. This guy is being paid by tax moneys ?Talk about draining the swamp. How many more are like this guy.

  10. He is EXACTLY what is wrong with this country. From this blatantly confiscatory gun confiscation schemes to this insane condoning and abetting illegal conduct he should be arrested, tried and subject to the usual punishment for treason.

  11. Ok, you don’t like using federal funding, then I have an idea. We need to start arresting and removing from office all those who are violating their oath of office. If they shelter illegals they need to go to jail for at least 5 years, removed from office, and fined the cost it will take to remove all the illegals under their watch. That works for me. Why punish everyone for their crime…lets charge the corrupt politicians, judges, and city/state officials.

It’s great for all you posters to take the high road, but if all the people you are talking about are deported, we will have serious issues in the western states where migrant workers pick the fruits and vegetables that we all eat. Even southern states would be hard pressed to have enough farm workers. That’s only one category, many lawn services, and home builders build homes with these workers.

Everyone should be asking the question, why has our government turned their heads and ignored this for almost 50 years? Because big business benefits from these workers. Plus many Americans will simply not work that hard, for such a small hourly wage. There is no reason for everyone of these people who have been here 10 or more years to ALREADY be citizens. They reason they aren’t is that the corporations want to keep the workers in fear of being deported. That way they never complain about sub-minimum hourly wages, and if they get hurt on the job, they never file workman’s compensation. Something else that benefits Americans, these people with fake SS cards pay into the system, and know they will not get a single penny out of it. I forget how many billions of dollars help to shore up the fund that pays SS and never take a penny out.

If we have allowed over 11M illegal people to have lived and worked her for decades, using terrorism is a joke. Yes there are people who would do us harm, but the ones who have lived here for years just aren’t a problem. Make them legal, get them on the tax rolls.

Who are you people mad at? The people who camel to America for a better life, or our government for doing nothing for decades? Apparently keeping them in the USA has been better for the USA than deporting them. I am more mad about the government, than I am the people who are here outside the legal immigration system.

    1. David Kaplan says:

Deporting illegal aliens would open up jobs for people all the people on welfare and help solve the welfare problem.

  13. David Kaplan says:

De Leon should be investigated and possibly prosecuted under Title 8, U.S.C. 1324(a) Offenses

Harboring — Subsection 1324(a)(1)(A)(iii) makes it an offense for any person who — knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has come to, entered, or remains in the United States in violation of law, conceals harbors, or shields from detection, or attempts to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection, such alien in any place, including any building or any means of transportation.

  14. I’m so beyond sick of the “they pay taxes” line. This is a highly information based economy. Without some post-secondary education you cannot earn enough to support more than yourself. People who didn’t complete high school in even their own country, and are not literate in the language of the country are not even earning enough to feed their own damn children, much less pay taxes. We spend $13,000/yr/child alone just for K-12 – and even more for those not English proficient. Just for the children already born in the US, that will be about $750 BILLION over the course of their education (census dept estimates that 45 million children live in household headed by illegal).
It doesn’t matter how hard they work or how much they believe that their kids will have a “better life”. This wave of Mexican immigration is the first major wave of immigrants where the second generation did no better than their Mexican born parents, and the 3rd gen is doing worse than their Mexican born grandparents (Pew). The data is CLEAR that they are not finding a better life. They are welfare dependent.

  15. Big Business is NOT employing illegals. It’s mostly small business and the self-employed.

  16. Steve Russak says:

Yes, we need the immigrants to pick our vegies & fruit in Calif. and other States and the illegals that have been here for years {including the DACA kids} need to be fast tracked for citizenship so we can stop fraudulent voting, increase our tax base and decrease the dependency on welfare by offering English language & education opportunities. The fake ID’s , SS numbers and Green cards are so easy to obtain it has become a national joke. A national voter ID card that cannot be faked is the only answer.
But the more important problem is the criminal element & the drug cartels that hide behind the progressive, liberal agenda of “snowflake” politicians like Jerry Brown. Irresponsible politicians like Pro Tem Kevin De Leon of Los Angeles only foster the criminal element and have never created a viable program to control & eliminate gangs, drug cartels and criminal illegal immigrants. These politicians are a danger to this country and the people they supposedly serve.
