Santa Baby, It's Freezing Outside! Folks Brace For The Cold As They Hunt For Season's Hottest Toy

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) —   Santa and the reindeer might love this cold weather but more than a few people are walking around these parts with red noses.

Take that, Rudolph!

Speaking of lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh, KCAL9's Jennifer Kastner went to a Toy's 'R Us in Atwater Village where she found people braving the cold to get the hottest toy in town.

And if you have to ask what the toy is, you apparently haven't heard of the Hatchimals.  Toys 'R Us just got in a new batch -- but the 86 furry little creatures don't go on sale until 6 a.m. Sunday -- hence why some are willing to brave an overnight line.(FYI, they are also upping the price from $59.99 to $89.99.)

Keisha Meza didn't mind the line. She was gung-ho to get one of the Hatchimals for her little brother.

"He's 7 and a strong believer in Santa Claus," she said, "so I'm here to make his little dreams come true. And I'll be here all night, with my dad, in the freezing cold."

"It's very chilly. It's like walking into a refrigerator," said shopper Andrew Menjivar.

According to the National Retail Federation, today was the biggest shopping day of the holiday season.

What cold?

"Well, I have on a hat, some boots two sweaters,  shirt scarf," said Tarrah Bennett-Smith.

Kastner asked her if that was enough?

"What I could use right now are my gloves and I could use another pair of leggings on top of these leggings," said Bennett-Smith.

The Village Stores at Westfield Topanga is smack dab in the middle of one of the coldest places Saturday.

Parts of the San Fernando Valley could drop into the lower 30s, officials said. A frost advisory is soon to be in place.

Kastner found many shoppers donning their fashion-forward winter wear.  Many looked for the hot spots -- like the mall's fire pit.

Of course, she also found those who laughed at the cold.Like David Nevar -- in shorts.

"I am [visiting] from Chicago so that's why. This weather is like summer to me," said Nevar.

Gabby Pantoja, meanwhile, was enjoying ice cream.

Ice cream!?

"It sounded good," Pantoja said.
