Buzz Aldrin Evacuated From South Pole Station For Medical Evaluation
ANTARCTICA (CBSLA.com) — Buzz Aldrin has been evacuated from the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station for medical evaluation, the National Science Foundation said Thursday.
According to the NSF, a ski-equipped LC-130 cargo plane, flown by the 109th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard, will provide a humanitarian medical evacuation flight for Aldrin to the McMurdo Station.
A flight from the McMurdo Station to a hospital in New Zealand will be scheduled as soon as possible, officials said.
Aldrin became one of the first men to walk on the Moon as past of the two-man lunar landing crew of Apollo 11 in 1969.
The NSF has not yet commented on Aldrin's medical condition.
