OSU Attack Hits Home With UCLA, Prompts Update On Campus Safety

WESTWOOD (CBSLA.com) — The Ohio State University attack Monday brought back painful memories of what happened at UCLA just five months ago.

"Just lock down all the doors. Just hide in the lab."

That was the text UCLA student Kevin Gim got from his professor during an active-shooter situation on the Westwood campus June 1 when a student shot and killed a professor and then himself.

Reginald Rong was walking to class at the Engineering Four building that day.

"Just suddenly everyone just rush out of the door, and I was freaking out," Rong said.

Anxiety is what many UCLA students felt this morning when news of violence at Ohio State broke.

During the UCLA shooting, a number of students had to barricade classroom doors because they couldn't be locked from the inside.

"I would definitely want to see the locks are changed," Rong said.

Since then, UCLA has updated the locks on the majority of its nearly 200 classroom doors. The remaining 20 will be finished during the winter break.

The Westwood campus has brought in active-shooter training with the help of a video from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

It's designed to deal with all threats, whether it's a gun, knife or car as in the case of Ohio State.

Gim believes kindness is the best way to stop violence. Since the June 1 shooting he's tried harder to reach out to friends who may be stressed out or struggling emotionally.

"So, that if you like stick together and connect with each other, I think you can prevent that sort of thing," Gim said.
