Drive-By Shooting Nearly Kills Sleeping Toddler, Wounds Teen In Mistaken Identity

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — There's a mosaic of the Virgin Mary on the outside of a home in San Bernardino and you might say a miracle happened inside.

A 3-year-old was sleeping in bed earlier when a bullet hit the wall above his head board in an apparent drive-by shooting Monday where the gunman may have mistaken his target.

The first bullet hit the kitchen window, shaved the ceiling, flew through a wall, and on the other side left a hole as big as a silver dollar, then nailed the wall above the headboard, investigators say.

Several other bullets hit the front gate of the home and struck a 13-year-old in the butt. The teen was outside hanging out with friends in the street, his older brother Lionel Collras said.

A surveillance photo from a nearby business shows a dark newer color car. Investigators have zeroed in on with four people inside as suspects.

Collras says his brother was possibly mistaken for someone else.

"They thought it was different people sitting here because a lot of different people sit right here so they probably thought it was them and didn't realize it was the 13 and 14-year olds," Collras said.

The 13-year old boy was at Loma Linda Medical Center in surgery and is expected to be OK.
