UCLA Removes Fliers Posted By 'White Students Group'
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — UCLA has removed a handful of fliers posted on campus by a group professing to be a "White Students Group," advocating for "the best interest of white Americans."
A copy of what appears to be one of the fliers was posted to social media Monday morning.
UCLA spokesman Todd Tamberg confirmed Wednesday that "three or four flyers were removed by UCLA maintenance staff after a campus search because the flyers violated UCLA's content-neutral posting regulations."
The school says it's unlikely the fliers were posted by members of the UCLA community.
"There is no white student group at UCLA," the school said in the statement. "It is unlikely that the flyers were posted by members of the UCLA community, due to the fact that the social media links included in the flyer were not UCLA-linked and did not mention UCLA, UCLA students, Los Angeles or higher education in general."
"Divisive and racist language do not reflect the ideals that we set for ourselves on this campus," the statement continued. "UCLA defends First Amendment rights and strongly encourages all members of our community to be respectful of one another as they engage in honest dialogue and debate."
UCLA has in the past week become a hotbed of protests against President-elect Donald Trump.
The school was previously at the center of a controversy when fliers containing racist and sexist epithets were posted at the UCLA Asian American Studies Center in 2014.
A request for comment sent to the email address listed on the fliers was not returned.
